What is IELTS?

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System and it is a test that is used to measure the proficiency of an individual in speaking, listening, reading, writing and understanding the language. The examination is conducted by the British Council (British Council) and IDP Education Australia Ltd. It has four parts: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

The minimum requirement for applying for any university or college is usually based on your score. If you want to study abroad, then it is important to have good scores in all sections.

The maximum score is 9 points. A person can get up to 7 points in each section. The higher the mark, the better will be your chances of getting admission into the course of your choice

Why IELTS Exam is required?

It is mandatory for students who are planning to apply for a degree program at universities outside their home country. They need to prove their level of English before they start studying.

If you have already studied in Australia, then you might not require this test because most Australian universities accept marks from other countries. But if you want to study in other countries, then you must take the test.

If you are going to travel overseas, then it is also necessary to show proof of your ability to speak, read, write and understand the language.

Types of IELTS

There are two types of tests: Academic and General Training.

Academic Test – This type of test measures how well you perform when you are studying. You may be asked questions about grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, spelling, sentence structure, etc.

General Training Test – This type of exam measures your general knowledge and skills. You may be tested on topics such as history, geography, science, mathematics, art, music, literature, etc.

Computer-Based IELTS:

This version of the test was introduced in 2006. The computer-based test requires you to answer multiple-choice questions using your keyboard. There is no paper and pencil involved.

You will be given 30 minutes to complete the test. You will receive immediate feedback after every question.

You can use a calculator during the test but only if it is specifically allowed. Some calculators do not work with the computer-based system.

You should try to avoid using the internet while taking the test.

How does IELTS Work?

The examiner reads out the instructions and gives you time to prepare. Then he/she asks you some questions. After answering them, you move onto the next set of questions. When you finish the test, you are told whether you got the right answers or not. Your results are sent to the British council within 10 days.
